B!SON is an acronym for ‘Bibliometric and Semantic Open Access Recommender Network’. B!SON is being developed within a 2-year project of the same name, conducted jointly by TIB and SLUB Dresden. The aim of the project is to implement a recommender system for quality-assured open access journals. From the large amount of open access journals available, this system will create a list of suitable journals sorted according to thematic relevance. For this purpose, in addition to common bibliometric methods of determining similarity, machine learning methods are used, which can determine relevant publication venues based on the semantic similarity of the title or abstract of the article to be published. The partners cooperate with OpenCitations and DOAJ (Directory of Open Access Journals) and strive for a close exchange with institutions that advise authors. While open access publishing requirements are steadily increasing and there is a growing number of open access journals, authors often lack knowledge of relevant, quality-assured open access journals that would be suitable for publishing their own research. A freely accessible tool that can be linked to local support structures will help to make the transition to open access successful.

Affordable Course Content

Affordable course content describes any free, low-cost, or openly licensed educational resources that can serve as alternatives to high-cost resources. Affordable course content can include textbooks, digital courseware, course modules, videos, journal articles, and any other materials used to support learning.

Most affordable course content still retains traditional copyright licensing, including restrictions on how a resource can be used or shared.  The exception is OER, which are free of cost and most copyright restrictions, allowing them to be freely used, revised, saved, and distributed.

Hypergraph

Hypergraph helps researchers reset research publishing, by publicly documenting research step by step, before the issues of after-the-fact articles even begin. Traditionally, articles are often written in hindsight, causing selective publication, p-hacking, and many other issues.

In Hypergraph, you only have to indicate what step you’re taking, link it to the step(s) it follows from, add relevant files, and indicate what file you want people to see first. This means that you can share all kinds of steps in your research—the theory, predictions, transcripts, materials, code, data, results (and more). Plus, you can share files such as Jupyter notebooks, scripts, data files, videos, audio files, text, and any other open file format.

When you share your latest research step, your peers can immediately see it, link next steps to it, and help you improve it. You share when you’re ready.

Project Euclid

Project Euclid was developed and deployed by the Cornell University Library, with start-up funding provided by The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, and is now jointly managed by the Cornell Library and Duke University Press. It was originally created to provide a platform for small scholarly publishers of mathematics and statistics journals to move from print to electronic in a cost-effective way.

Through a combination of support by subscribing libraries and participating publishers, over 70% of the journal articles hosted on Project Euclid are openly available. As of 2018, Project Euclid hosts 1.8 million pages of open-access content.

meTypeset

meTypeset is a tool to covert from Microsoft Word .docx format to NLM/JATS-XML for scholarly/scientific article typesetting.

meTypeset is a fork of the OxGarage stack and uses TEI as an intemediary format to facilitate interchange. Components are licensed under the GPL v2 and the Creative Commons Attribution-Sharealike 3.0 clauses, according to the various original sources of the fork.

The transforms within this software can be invoked in several different ways:

  1. Run through a *nix compatible command line with the bin/meTypeset.py script.
  2. A limited set of the transforms can be called through any renderer capable of parsing XSLT 1.0. This will not include the meTypeset classifier stages.

The modfications to the OxGarage stack contained within this project are Copyright Martin Paul Eve 2014 and released under the licenses specified in each respective file.
